Time to Play

Posted on June 27 2017

“When we were small children we played dress up and everybody had a good time. So why stop?”

- Iris Apfel

I have always loved fashion. Our relationship began at a very young age. Like most little girls I would watch my mother get dressed to go out, put together outfits, do her hair, put on jewellery, put on make-up. These impressions run deep in little girls. The love of shiny things. I recall asking my mother for a ring for my 5th birthday. Not toys; a ring. She got me a big glass bauble. I was so in love with it that I wore it the wrong way so I could hold the stone in my hand.

My older cousin, Debbie, used to dress me and my other little cousins up as dolls with full costumes and make-up and direct us as we would act out scenes from T.V shows. We loved it. I have a vivid memory of myself at about 6; rollers in my hair, high heels on my feet, cigarette in hand (not lit), telling my ‘daughter’ that she couldn’t go on a date with her no-good bum of a boyfriend who didn’t have a job. Her retort? ‘He’s changed mom! He’s getting a job and he going back to school.’ ‘He’ was my cousin, Albert, who was 7 at the time. I even recall him getting down on his knees pleading with me to take my ‘daughter’ (our cousin, Karen) out. We took these roles seriously.

The biggest influencer of the time was Barbie. She is rooted deep in the collective unconscious of every boomer female. I had numerous versions of Barbie, Midge, Skipper and Ken. She led an exciting and fascinating life. Single, living in a beautiful beach house, travelling, going out on dates with Ken, meeting up with friends, dressed to the nines. Much like the lives of today Instagram stars; fashion bloggers. Coincidence?

My mother sowed the seeds and Barbie sealed the deal. I was in love and this love has endured. Give me coiffed hair, hats, pant suits, dresses, belts, bracelets, earrings, rings, purses, shoes, shoes, shoes! Give me the 60’s, the 70’s, and the 90’s (NOT the 80’s) and I am still in that blissful place of play, and fun, and love. Is it right? Is it wrong? I’m passed the point of asking and I’m embracing the joy.

Summer is the perfect time to play with fashion and this year fashion has made it very easy. Dresses, tanks, airy scarves, bandanas, bangles, big earrings, boyfriend jeans, bright patches and pins; all easily paired with every type of sandal you can imagine. We’ve got lots to choose from; block heels, flatforms, leather sneakers, high tops, slides, peep toes, slingbacks, lace-ups and kitten heels to name a few.

We went big summer because we think everyone needs some fun. When you come in and see all we’ve got, we think you’ll agree.
